ann_r_starr: (Voices in my head)
I haven't posted in months, I know. I'm bad about posting.

And uni is a slow, but fasinating death, I swear. The train ride gives me at least one, and up to three solid hours of writing time, which is good. Storm's Honour edits are happening slowly, but surely. Which is also a slow, exhusting process that I swear drains the life out of me.

I've done a tiny bit of writing on Water's Fate, but not a huge amount. No real energy to spare at the moment, not until I readjust to university life.

I also locked myself out of my flat today. I haven't done that in three years, so take it as proof of my being utterly braindead.

Short post, not much in it I know. But see above comment on braindead-ness. Nothing left to spare, even for a blog post.

Well, it's been months so I probably should post an update on the progress of Storm's Honour. So far I've done a detailed edit/rewrite on about 30 pages and a skim edit on 129 pages. I've also done a plot time-line so I can see places where there are gaps in the pacing and where the plot is too busy.

Page 129 also marks the place where I need to rewrite the ending for the forth time. *sigh* Peter De Vries said, "I love being a writer. What I can't stand is the paper work." There are days when I fully agree. Tonight, as I wonder if I'll ever produce an ending that I remain happy with for more then a month, is one of those days.

Still, rewrites are part of the job I fear. I don't have to like it, but it won't fix its self. So I better get my butt in the chair and my fingers on the keyboard again.

After I get some sleep, that is.

"Well, since I owe you for saving my life, I should warn you..." Flash paused and took a swallow of his ale, either to brace himself or to have an excuse not to look at the two mercenaries. "The ceasefire has broken. Maelstrom and Talen'sul are at war."

Amaro and Talon couldn't look at each other as the damning words and their bitter meaning sank in.

Well, while sis is taking her turn with Water's Fate, I'm back at work on Storm's Honour - trying to transform it from a very rough first draft to a somewhat more polished second draft.

This is an interesting experience, I'm finding. I've never gotten to the rewrite stage before this and it's not at all like writing the first draft was. The first draft, over all, was a great deal easier. Maybe because I'm not a particularly good editor, but the rewriting is feeling like extremely hard work. It's worth while effort, though, but it's taken some adjustment.

For one thing, I've taken to going out to a coffee shop an hour away from home. I find that that makes it easier to keep my butt in the chair and work, since I have no net to distract me and have to justify the trip to myself by getting writing done. Which usually means I have a damn good coffee and a light lunch, then get two to three hours of work done.

Boredom is a great motivator, I've found this week.  Editing progress bar will be on the bottom of every post from now on.

Storm's Honour - Editing Progress

Yep, that's it. The End. The writting rollar-coaster is over and done. Now it's time for a few drinks, a headache tablet or two and some celebrating.

Then it'll be time to get down to the nitty-gritty of editting, editting some more and polishing before sending it out into the world.

How am I feeling? It's a bit of a jumble actually. Relief, pride, satisfaction and yeah, a little bit sorry.

I've had some fun moments writting this, I've had some frustrationg moments (if I never hear "Amaro isn't very heroic if he doesn't always win" again it'll be too soon), some heart-breaking moments (I still grieve for those pages on my lost memory stick) and we won't even go into how many times I wanted to hit delete and walk away from the whole damn thing.

But over all? It's been one of the best times of my life and, after I've had time to catch my breath, I'm looking forward to sharing the next stage of the journey with you all.

Thanks for the support guys. I couldn't have done this without you.

Quick word count update, complete with balloons and beer. Help yourself.

Writerly rant to follow

Storm's Honour continues to move onwards. Now, if I can just prod Amaro and Talon into walking across the street and into an inn, there'll be a fun moment. I think I'll even post an extract of the fun once it's written so that everyone can share it with me.
